European paper recycling rate hits 70.4 per cent in 2011


The European paper recycling rate grew by around 1 per cent in 2011 to reach 70.4 per cent, according to the European Recovered Paper Council’s annual monitoring report.

However, the total amount of paper collected and recycled in the paper sector remains stable at 58 million tonnes.


Since 2000, the recycling rate in Europe has increased by 18 per cent and 13 EU countries now exceed 70 per cent paper recycling, but 12 are still below 60 per cent.

The number of cycles a paper fibre goes through as part of the recycling and use process has reached 3.4 in Europe compared to a global average of 2.4.
