Belgian packaging recycling scheme Fost Plus has announced that it is building a new plastic recycling plant in Belgium that will specialise in PP and HDPE.
It has signed a contract with plastic recycling specialists Morssinkhof Plastics to construct the facility that is scheduled to open in October 2024.
Based in Lommel, it will be the fifth plastic recycling facility in Belgium and will recycled PP such as butter tubes and ready meal trays and HDPE bottles such as shampoo and milk bottles.
It is expected to recycle 40,000 tonnes per year and will turn the plastics into granules or plastic pellets.
Around 24,000 tonnes of feedstock will come from the Fost Plus blue bag recycling collections in Belgium.
Fost Plus managing director Wim Geens said: “We are very pleased with this new plant.
“Thanks to the good habits and efforts of our fellow citizens, who ensure that all packaging ends up in blue bags, we are among the best in Europe when it comes to recycling.
“It has always been our intention to keep recycling rates as close to home as possible. This new plant is the last step in the creation of a local circular economy that makes Belgium a recycling hub at the heart of Europe.”
An investment of €30 million (£26 million) has been made in the facility.
