An investment package of £125 million (€142.2 million) will be used by 56 projects as part of the European Union’s LIFE Environment & Resource Efficiency programme.

This is part of a €227.7 million investment package approved by the European Commission for projects across Europe under its LIFE programme.

The 57 Life Environment & Resource Efficiency programme will see €71.9 million provided by the EU with the rest coming from other sources.

This investment will cover projects in five key thematic areas, which are air, environment and health, resource efficiency, waste and water.

Of the 56 projects, the 21 resource efficiency projects alone will mobilise €43 million.

European Environment Commissioner Karmenu Vella (pictured) said: “I am delighted to see that this year again our LIFE programme will support many innovative projects to address our common environmental challenges.

“LIFE-funded projects use relatively little funding and with simple ideas to create profitable green businesses that deliver on the transition to a low-carbon and circular economy.”
