Environmental charity Hubbub and reuse platform Reposit have launched a multi-store returnable cup initiative in Glasgow.
Borrow Cup allows people to pay a £1 deposit at more than 40 outlets in the Scottish city to have their drink served in a container that can be taken elsewhere and used, swapped or returned.
Big-name chains including Costa Coffee, Caffè Nero and Burger King are participating in the trial, along with a number of local cafes.
Hubbub and Reposit hope to save 100,000 disposable cups over 12 weeks.
The partners said this was the first time multiple big and small UK outlets had teamed up for such an initiative.
They added: “Borrow Cup has a simple and convenient user journey with minimal friction. There are no apps or sign-ups.”
Radio-frequency identification will be used to track the cups, which will be taken away by Reposit for cleaning before flowing back into the scheme.
Data will be collected to determine long-term “financial and environmental viability”.
