Ministers have announced that households should put out certain food and drink cartons with plastic waste under its incoming Simpler Recycling scheme.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs revealed the rule in an update on the requirements coming into force next March.
It said food and drink cartons made of fibre-based composite should be collected with plastic, rather than cardboard, waste.
The update added that plastic film packaging and bags should also be put in the plastics bin from 31 March 2027.
It also clarified that written assessments can not be used to avoid collecting any of the required dry recyclable waste streams.
Ministers last year revealed a four-bin system for households under Simpler Recycling.
From next March, councils must separately collect food and garden waste; paper and card; glass, metal and plastic; and residual refuse.
The first phase of the government’s Simpler Recycling overhaul kicked in earlier this year when many businesses were subjected to workplace rules under the scheme.
