Buildings materials company Hanson UK has reduced the amount of waste it sent to landfill in 2014 by 29%.

In its 2015 Sustainability Report looking at 2014, the business reported that the biggest fall in waste to landfill came from recycling a lot more filler dust into asphalt.

It has now achieved a 62% reduction based on 2010 ahead of a 2020 target of 85%.

However, on the use of the cement-replacement product Regen that uses ground granulated blastfurnace slag, Hanson slipped back using 37.19% in concrete from 37.47% the year before.

The company also increased the amount of solid recovered fuel used to power its cement kilns with 61% of the fuel coming from this source. This amounted to a total of 207,121 tonnes of SRF compared to 181,738 tonnes in 2013 (representing 58%).

Hanson UK chief executive Patrick O’Shea said: “It’s clear from this report that we still have a lot of hard work to do if we are to achieve all our 2020 targets, but I am confident that with a continuing favourable trading environment we can, and will, succeed.”
