Innovators could win cash to boost recycling or reuse of takeaway cups

Major retailers are offering cash to support innovations boosting the recycling and reuse of takeaway cups.

The National Cup Recycling Scheme (NCRS), funded by seven brands including Costa Coffee, McDonald’s and Caffè Nero, is giving councils, businesses and other organisations the chance to win backing for their project.

Its Beyond the Bin Fund will open to applications on 1 September. A successful bid will secure up to £45,000 as well as access to mentors and promotion.

NCRS manager Hannah Osmond said: “This new fund is a major investment to encourage innovation in cup recycling infrastructure and reuse.

“We are hoping to trigger scalable ideas that will make a real difference in the future.”

The fund is looking for innovations that drive progress in one of three areas: awareness, infrastructure or research.

Bids must be received by 31 October. A shortlist will be revealed on 15 November with up to five applicants invited to attend an interview with a judging panel.

There will then be a chance to refine proposals before a final decision is made on a winner before Christmas.
