Lidl owner Schwarz Group completes takeover of Cespa in Spain and Portugal

Schwarz Group’s PreZero subsidiary has completed the acquisition of waste disposal and recycling business Cespa in Spain and Portugal.

In accordance with the merger control procedure and following the EU Commission approval, around 16,000 new employees at 140 sites have joined PreZero.

PreZero chief executive Thomas Kyriakis said: “As the environmental division of the Schwarz Group, we are steadily expanding our role as a major driver of circular economy in Europe.

“With the acquisition in Spain and Portugal, we are successfully following this path and want to contribute to closing further recycling loops in the future with innovative solutions.”

Cespa collects around 8 million tonnes of recyclables annually from public and private customers. It is a leader in recycling of biowaste, plastics and compost.

PreZero now employs a total of around 30,000 people at 430 sites in Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden, Austria, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the US.
