Three appliances were sent immediately with two more requested soon afterwards. Four relief crews were then sent in around dawn. Firefighters used breathing apparatus and a thermal imaging camera as well as hoses and breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze.

Shortly after 3am, the service said a fire within the building measured about 30m by 40m and involved 12 tonnes of mixed non-hazardous waste and a similar weight of cardboard.

Specialist officers liaised with local businesses downwind of the incident to support trading continuity. Local residents and commercial premises were at one stage told to ensure or doors and windows were kept shut.

By 5pm on Tuesday the incident was marked as closed.

Robert Sanders, regional manager at Suez Recycling and Recovery UK, said: “We would like to thank Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service for its swift response in relation to the fire this morning at Greendale Business Park waste transfer station.

“While the fire is dealt with, waste is being transferred to neighbouring facilities and there is no disruption to services. I would like to thank our staff who attended site to assist the fire service, as well as neighbouring homes and businesses for their patience.”
