Major fire closes Bristol recycling centre for a weekend

A recycling centre in the West Country had to close throughout last weekend after a major fire.

Bristol Waste Company’s Avonmouth site, on Poplar Way East, was unable to open on Saturday 5 or Sunday 6 April.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service sent 16 fire engines to the site after a blaze was reported on the Friday afternoon.

It urged local people to avoid the area and to keep windows and doors closed if they lived or worked nearby.

Bristol Waste Company said the household recycling centre, reuse shop and waste depot on the plot were closed until Monday 7 April.

“We are grateful to fire crews who attended the scene quickly and, working alongside our site team, were able to extinguish the fire and keep everyone safe,” said the firm.

Monitoring and clean-up work lasted throughout the weekend.

Bristol Waste Company recently celebrated its Reuse Shops selling or donating 250,000 items.
