The Malaysian state of Penang has begun a crackdown on plastics recycling companies that are not meeting their environmental obligations.

Two plastic recycling businesses have been ordered to immediately stop their operations in the state.

The Penang Department of Environment director Sharifah Zakiah Syed Sahab has ordered both factories under Section 38 of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 to stop the pollution and to enable the department to conduct further investigation.

In a statement she said: “Our initial investigation found that one of the factories was recycling plastic waste without an environmental impact assessment (EIA) approval.

“It is equipped with several machines such as plastic crushing and resin machines, which caused noise disturbance to the residents nearby, especially during the night until early morning.”

The other plant that was ordered to close had a waste approved permit (AP) but washed the plastic waste without having an industrial effluent treatment system.

Both facilities have not been named.

Malaysia’s AP system is designed to ensure that plastic recycling is done to a high standard.

In February last year, Malaysia revealed that it had closed 228 plastic recycling plants that did not have the correct AP license.
