Champagne giant Moët & Chandon is working with packaging manufacturer Amcor Capsules on a plastic-free foil.
The resultant product, made from aluminium and paper, is expected to launch this October.
Branded Essentielle, the foil’s carbon footprint is almost a third lower than standard alternatives, according to Amcor.
It will be produced at the Mareuil-sur-Aÿ site in Champagne from October this year, initially only with texturing but from early next year with a smooth finish.
Amcor’s Transparence programme, developed in July 2023 to reduce its environmental impact, has seen the company integrate high levels of recycled tin into capsules and sparkling foil, and incorporate up to 46 per cent recycled aluminium in screw caps for the still wine and spirits segment.
Managing director Yannick Magnon said: “Amcor Capsules is drawing on Essentielle to revolutionise the industry by offering a recyclable, plastic-free solution that suits the fast pace of packaging lines.”
Maison Moët chief executive Sibylle Scherer added: “For over 10 years, we have been spearheading initiatives to reduce our environmental impact and cut carbon emissions.
“Our goal for 2024 is to take this even further, and working with Amcor Capsules on the Essentielle foil reflects this commitment.”
