Packaging mill group Mondi has ramped up production of a grade it is calling Kraft Top White using its new PM19 machine in Slovakia.

Kraft Top White uses a white top layer and a recycled fibre bottom layer.

Following a €370 million (£318 million) investment to upgrade the mill, it has a production capacity of 300,000 tonnes and will use 200,000 tonnes of recycled fibre.

Located in Ružomberok, the mill will provide the grade to customers across Europe. It is intended to be used for shelf-ready packaging, point-of-sale displays, trays, e-commerce packaging, consumer durables and customised packaging applications.

Production of the grade began in January and the new PM19 is working up to full capacity.

Mondi chief executive Corrugated Packaging Markus Gärtner said: “Mondi’s purpose is to contribute to a better world by making innovative, sustainable packaging and paper solutions.

“Our new paper machine in Slovakia enables us to offer customers a high-quality new containerboard solution, while further improving the environmental footprint of our Ružomberok mill.

“Despite the challenges of operating during the pandemic, the local team executed this complex project safely and efficiently, and we are proud of the positive impact that 125 new permanent jobs will have on the local community.”
