Mondi opens new recycled-board production mill in Italy

Sustainable packaging producer Mondi has launched a recycled containerboard mill in Italy.

The Duino facility was “successfully started” in April and will eventually be capable of producing more than 400,000 tonnes of material per year.

Mondi said it was “focused on maintaining consistent production of high-quality recycled containerboard, made from 100% recovered fibre” as it ramped-up the operation of the mill.

Markus Gärtner, chief executive of Mondi Corrugated Packaging, said: “Starting up this machine on time is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the dedication and expertise of our team.

“With Mondi Duino now part of our integrated value chain, we are excited to serve our customers with sustainable packaging solutions from our expanded network of six containerboard mills worldwide.”

The firm also said that early production runs from a paper machine opened at its Å tÄ›tí mill in the Czech Republic in December had “demonstrated excellent results in terms of strength, runnability and consistent quality”.

It added: “The new machine enables Mondi to meet the rising demand for paper-based flexible packaging while strengthening the group’s vertically integrated paper-bags business. It also supports the optimisation of production efficiency across the group’s entire kraft paper portfolio.”

Roman Senecky, chief operating officer for kraft paper at Mondi said the Czech development “marks an important milestone in Mondi’s journey towards making all packaging solutions reusable, recyclable, or compostable, as part of its Mondi Action Plan 2030 sustainability commitments.”
