The world faces a shortage of essential metals if it does not recycle more, according to a United Nations Environment Programme report. It states that metal recycling rates are “discouragingly low” and that a “recycling society appears no more than a distant hope”. The study found that that less than a third of 60 metals have a recycling rate above 50 per cent and 34 have a recycling rate below 1 per cent.
