New HSE guidance aims to help prevent accidents between hand sorters and vehicles

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued new guidance that provides advice about preventing accidents when workers are involved in totting.

Totting is when waste or recyclables are sorted by hand pickers from the floor.

The guidance is designed to help prevent accidents happening to people who work in waste and recycling facilities.

In particular, it aims to solve workplace transport problems and prevent accidents to pedestrians involved in totting activities.

It also touches on manual handing, slips and trips, hygiene and welfare and other environmental considerations.
