New Italian EU presidency to prioritise plastic bag reduction

Italy has taken over the presidency of the European Union and one of its priorities will be to reduce plastic bag consumption.

Speaking to members of the European Parliament Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee (ENVI), Italian Environment Minister Gian Luca Galletti said that he hoped the Italian presidency would make “significant progress” on reducing the consumption of plastics bags among other measures.

While he said he also wanted to prioritise moves towards a circular economy and stimulating green growth including through the 2030 climate and energy targets.

He added: “We need a green cultural paradigm shift, and to make clear that growth and jobs can be created in the whole economy by being green.”
