New packaging-test lab aims to boost material switches

A new Scottish company is claiming to offer the country’s drinks sector its first “dedicated laboratory” to test out packaging solutions and reduce waste.

Stirling-based PackSure said its facility had recently been accredited by the International Safe Transit Association to deliver certification to manufacturers.

The lab is suitable to test existing and in-development packaging solutions, including more environmentally friendly options, according to the company.

PackSure was established with assistance from the Scottish Government to help brands improve the design of their packaging to slash breakage, waste and cost.

Brian McCready, lab manager at the new firm, said: “PackSure is the first facility of its kind in Scotland.

“Offering a range of testing services, tailored to the requirements of the drinks industry, we provide a comprehensive suite of environmental, physical and specification conformance tests.

“Being able to test new designs and specifications before products are placed on the market gives brands and companies the peace of mind that their product packaging is fit for purpose – and can significantly boost the use of more sustainable materials.”

A report this month found that more than half of food and drink items on sale in British supermarkets were contained in plastic “unnecessarily”.
