A new Shotton paper mill on Deeside in North Wales has been granted planning permission by Flintshire County Council.

Councillors on the planning committee voted 14-1 in favour of permitting the building of the new mill.

Owned by Turkish group Eren, the new Shotton mill will replace the old newsprint facility that had been on the site under previous owner UPM.

Planning officers at Flintshire County Council had recommended that the facility be given the go-ahead.

It will have a total capacity of 1 million tonnes when complete and will produce containerboard, cardboard containers and tissue products.

All 190 employees from the previous UPM Shotton mill have been retained, and around 800 jobs are expected to be supported from the £600 million investment being made by Eren.
