A public body in southern England has installed a raft of recycling bins in a bid to boost material recovery and slash carbon emissions over Christmas.
Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust brought in two triple containers and 10 double units to East Surrey Hospital in Redhill.
They have been sited in entrances, corridors and reception areas to capture more material.
The trust said it was aiming to boost its recycling rate by a tenth and work towards net zero emissions.
Michael Brownjohn, waste manager at the body, said: “I’m really pleased that with the support of the Friends of East Surrey Hospital we have been able to take this positive step just in time for one of the busiest times of year for our hospital.
“These new recycling bins will not only reduce cost and carbon emissions as part of our Green Plan but boost the trust’s recycling rate by around 10 per cent, which is a great place to be ahead of 2025.”
The trust formed a waste department in 2022 as well as introducing multi-use sharps containers, reducing the amount of waste it generates and eliminating nearly 15 tonnes of plastic from the supply chain each year.
By 2040 the NHS is aiming to become net-zero.
