In its latest sustainability report for 2012/13, global sportswear manufacturer Nike has revealed that it has used 2 billion plastic bottles in its products since 2010.
In its 2013 financial year, Nike garments used 43 per cent recycled polyester than in 2012 with 19 per cent of polyester products now using recycled plastic bottle content. This represents 20 million kg of recycled polyester fabric.
The company also revealed that it is on target to meet its aim of reducing waste in its finished goods by 10 per cent by 2015 with 8.6 per cent achieved between 2011 and 2013.
While it still has a way to go to reduce the weight of shoeboxes by 10 per cent by 2015, achieving just 3 per cent between 2011 and 2013.
The company also revealed that it diverted 92 per cent of its waste from landfill in 2013 from its major global distribution centres, with 69 per cent diverted from its Nike World Headquarters and 44 per cent diverted from its retail stores.
