Ocado grows Polytag partnership

Online supermarket Ocado has expanded the range of products it sells with QR codes giving information on sustainability measures.

The grocery delivery giant now has more than 60 items featuring Polytag Digital Link stamps that allow customers to understand more about their credentials.

Ocado last year trialled invisible UV tags from Polytag on milk bottles to get data on where packaging material was sent. It also partnered with the firm on a digital deposit return scheme.

The grocer will now package certain dry food and cleaning products in refillable containers and use QR codes to educate customers on how to take part in the scheme.

Once customers scan Polytag codes with their smartphone, they are taken to a landing page with product information.

Ocado uses these to engage with and educate its customers on key sustainability topics such as sourcing initiatives, recycling and food waste prevention.

Polytag chief executive Alice Rackley added: “Surpassing 60 products with Ocado Retail – including its new refillable options – is a step forward in making sustainable shopping more accessible.”

Laura Fernandez, senior packaging and sustainability manager at Ocado Retail, added: “Polytag’s QR codes give us the opportunity to explain how re-using can eliminate single-use packaging, and how easy and convenient the Ocado solution is.”
