A scheme run by United Biscuits and TerraCycle has led to 1 million biscuit wrappers being recycled.

The McVitie’s Biscuit Wrapper Brigade partnership with TerraCycle was launched in 2012.

As UK councils do not have the infrastructure to recycle biscuit wrappers, customers can drop off wrappers at certain locations or send them in to be recycled.

Consumers are then rewarded with two points for every biscuit wrapper sent in with each point redeemable as a one pence contribution to the school, charity or non-profit organisation of the sender’s choice. So far, £35,000 has been raised.

From the wrappers, TerraCycle turns this into a pellet, which is then used in the manufacturing of products such as park benches, watering cans and waste bins.

United Biscuits UK managing director Jon Eggleton said: “We are delighted on the progress to date of the McVitie’s Biscuit Wrapper Brigade.

“The programme has been embraced by people all over the UK to save used biscuit wrappers from landfill, increase environmental awareness and raise over £35,000 to help support a variety of schools, charities and non-profit organisations.”
