Major companies including ASDA, Sainsbury’s, Sky, Jaguar Land Rover, Nestle, Unilever, M&S and Biffa have called on the Government to meet its obligations under the Climate Change Economy.

In a statement, the businesses, NGOs and charities said that the advice from the Committee on Climate Change “if rapidly implemented and supported by stable policies, these recommendations should make the UK a global leader in the low-carbon sector and create significant growth for the economy, including much needed green jobs across the regions”.

Speaking on behalf of the group that also included Kingfisher, O2, Cisco, Aviva, WWF, and REA, former Financial Services Authority chair Lord Adair Turner said: “The majority of the business world is clear that ambitious and stable action to tackle climate change makes business sense.

“The time has come to give the decarbonisation agenda the importance and stability it deserves.”

Alstom UK president Terence Watson added: “We’re a manufacturing company. We need policy stability in order to make long-term investments, as do our customers and supply chain.

“’Stop-go’ politics threatens that investment and raises costs for everyone. That is why changing the Fourth Carbon Budget now would be a strategic mistake with consequences. And let’s not forget the great opportunity here – hundreds of thousands of jobs all over the country in new growth areas where the UK can take a significant market share.”
