PackUK has published new rules for packaging providers to use when classifying their materials under the now-in-force extended producer responsibility regime.
The oversight body updated the Recyclability Assessment Methodology (RAM), which was initially set out at the end of last year.
PackUK said an event described as a “RAM simplification sprint” had identified changes to the system in response to industry feedback.
The latest iteration of the rules, known as v1.1, retains the green/amber/red traffic-light system to classify materials and help determine fees under extended producer responsibility laws.
A presentation on the new system, which is designed to be less complex and more user friendly, will be made on Tuesday 6 May. Interested parties can register here.
“The sprint was positively received by industry,” said PackUK in a statement. “A broad range of stakeholders contributed a variety of comments and content suggestions for v1.1, including targeted feedback from retailers and brands with large and complex product portfolios.
“The suggestions were cross-referenced against industry standards and technical feedback was sought from industry material associations to ensure accuracy and consistency.”
In-scope producers are required to apply the methodology for household packaging placed on the market from 1 January 2025, with the first deadline for doing so on 1 October this year.
