German manufacturer Koehler Paper has produced recyclable packaging material for Astrabio pasta.
The firm’s NexPlus Seal Pure flexible product has been used for the Italian food producer’s Iris-branded penne and linguine offerings.
Koehler said the paper-based material was heat-sealable, maximised shelf life and had “extraordinary strength”.
It is also recyclable and has a lower carbon footprint than conventional plastic alternatives, according to the German company.
Tesco last year moved 10 premium pasta products to paper packaging.
The supermarket giant said the new material for its Finest dried pasta lines was fully recyclable at the kerbside and would remove more than 30 tonnes of plastic from shelves every year.
Meanwhile, drinks giant Diageo last year trialled a fibre-based bottle for whisky brand Johnnie Walker Black Label.
The London-based manufacturer supplied the spirit in 90 per cent paper containers to the 1820 bar on Princes Street in Edinburgh last autumn.
