Unilever-owned company, PG Tips, has announced that it is switching to fully biodegradable tea bags in the hope of cutting down plastic pollution.
The new eco-friendly teabags, made from a plant-based material and 100% renewable, will go on sale in UK supermarkets next week.
According to the UK Tea and Infusions Association, teabags account for 96% of the 165 million cups of tea drunk every day throughout the UK.
Unilever vice president of refreshment Noel Clarke said: “Tea is the most consumed beverage in the UK, with nine billion PG tips teabags sold every year. Our latest move maintains the same great taste of our tea whilst minimising our environmental impact.”
