UK chemical recycling company Plastic Energy has signed a deal with TotalEnergies to further develop the technology.
Under the agreement, Plastic Energy will build a second Spanish facility in Seville, that will transform end-of-life plastic into its recycled feedstock known as TACOIL. TotalEnergies will then convert this raw material into virgin-quality polymers, which can be used for food grade packaging.
The plant will process 33,000 tonnes of post-consumer end-of-life plastic each year and is set to become operational in 2025.
This deal comes on top of one that was signed between the two companies in 2020 to build a 15,000 tonnes per year facility in France and another deal from October for a 33,000 tonnes per year plant in Texas, USA.
Plastic Energy chief executive and founder Carlos Monreal said: “I am pleased to announce another new Plastic Energy plant in Spain, and a new collaboration agreement with our partner, TotalEnergies.
“This new large-scale recycling plant will be an impactful addition to our existing portfolio of operational plants in Spain and will allow for an increase in the amount of end-of-life plastics that we can recycle in Europe.”
