According to the Telegraph newspaper, Prime Minister David Cameron was overheard praising the plastic and paper carrier bag charge in Wales.

The Prime Minister is reported to have said to schoolchildren and carrier bag charge campaigners: “It has been very successful in Wales and we are looking again at the options here. You have come at the right time as we are just discussing that.”

He was speaking at an event in which children and carrier bag charge campaigners attended Downing Street to express their views as part of the Break the Bag Habit campaign.

Zac Goldsmith MP who attended the event told the Telegraph: “The PM has spoken in the past about the need to take action.

“It was reassuring to hear not only that he was discussing the issue today in Number 10, but that he has noted the successful bag charge in Wales. I know many people are looking forward to the next step here in England.”

Use of plastic carrier bags has fallen by 80 per cent in Wales following the introduction of a charge in October 2011.
