Almost nine in 10 consumer goods brands want to speed up the switch to more recyclable packaging materials, research has revealed.
A poll of 100 UK experts at major corporations found that 87 wanted to replace conventional plastic more quickly.
The study, conducted by manufacturer Aquapak, showed that 92 per cent of fast-moving consumer good brands intend to eradicate plastic from consumer packaging.
However, more than a quarter don’t expect this to happen until the final months of this decade.
Three in 10 respondents described the pace of change in their own business as “too slow” with just one in 10 calling it “fast”.
The main barriers to using more environmentally friendly packaging options were listed as cost, availability and functionality.
John Williams, chief technical officer at Aquapak, said: “There is undoubtedly some confusion in the market [caused] by the number of ‘new’ materials which offer potential but all too often exaggerate [their] properties and availability.
“It is important that there is an acceleration in the use of materials which are available at scale, offer the required functionality, run down existing conversion lines and have a viable end-of-life solutions for the consumer.”
