European Union Environment Commissioner Karmenu Vella has said that product design will be an integral part of the new Circular Economy Package.
The European Commission has promised to introduce a new package later this year after withdrawing the previous legislative proposal at the end of 2014.
In an interview with Germany’s Recycling News, Commissioner Vella said that a broader approach is necessary because the previous proposals were too focused on the consumer side of the circular economy.

He added: “We believe that it is possible to put a stronger focus on the production side, which extends beyond end-of-life waste management and starts at the product design.
“One example is the innovative eco-design solutions that make the products more durable and minimise the use of primary materials.”
