British cleaning products company Reckitt Benckiser is to trial a system where its Vanish and other HDPE bottles will be collected from households.

The firm is working with French start-up Yoyo to distribute Vanish pink bags to 500 households in Lyon to encourage them to recycle HDPE bottles including those used to package the stain removing product.

A team of coaches will work with the households to identify the HDPE bottles, while Reckitt Benckiser is also funding the sorting of the bottles.

Over the next 10 months, the pilot aims to collect a minimum of 1 tonne of plastic, which is equivalent to 33,000 bottles, from 10 districts in Lyon.

The bottles will be recycled by Veolia, who will also provide technical expertise on how to produce material that can be used by Reckitt Benckiser again.

If the pilot proves to be a success, the company hopes to scale it up.

Yoyo’s recycling system has so far collected PET bottles, using its distinctive recycling bags, from 50,000 French households and 500 collection points.
