The last month of 2022 was one of contrasts. While OCC had a good month, and news and pams was up, mixed suffered a sharp fall in export volumes.

A total of 219,744 tonnes of OCC left the UK in December, increasing from November’s 190,616 tonnes. This made it the best month since February 2021.

For news & pams, there was also more exported, with the total rising to 19,589 tonnes from 19,042 tonnes in November.

But exports of mixed dropped in December to 88,695 tonnes from 110,690 tonnes in the previous month. This made it the worst month since August last year.

OCC – Commodity code 470710

Malaysia was easily the best destination for OCC in December taking 54,525 tonnes, increasing from November’s 38,744 tonnes.

India came next with 44,766 tonnes, up from 31,688 tonnes in November.

Turkey imported 38,251 tonnes of UK material in December, dropping from 52,933 tonnes in the previous month.

Not far behind was Vietnam with 36,676 tonnes, increasing from 29,345 tonnes in November.

Indonesia followed with 18,259 tonnes, up from 11,012 tonnes in the month before.

The EU as a whole slumped to 13,838 tonnes from 19,083 tonnes in November. Of this, 6,788 tonnes went to the Netherlands (7,679 tonnes in November), 4,357 tonnes to Germany (5,140 tonnes in November), and 1,273 tonnes to France (3,824 tonnes in November).

Thailand was just behind the EU with 13,429 tonnes, increasing from 7,173 tonnes in the preceding month.

Mixed paper – Commodity code 470790

India remained the key destination for mixed in December, although it dropped to 39,965 tonnes compared to 50,967 tonnes in November.

Vietnam was next with 17,911 tonnes, only marginally lower than 17,992 tonnes in the month before.

The EU saw a sharp slump to just 12,642 tonnes, compared to November’s 23,307 tonnes. The Netherlands took 5,783 tonnes of this (14,285 tonnes in November) and Germany 4,737 tonnes (5,935 in November).

Indonesia was next with 6,558 tonnes, up from 5,530 tonnes in the previous month.

December saw 4,971 tonnes go to Thailand, down from 5,563 tonnes in November.

Malaysia took 2,340 tonnes in December, falling from 3,784 tonnes in the earlier month.

Turkey followed with 1,766 tonnes, an increase on 1,358 tonnes in the penultimate month of 2022.

Taiwan was next with 1,475 tonnes, almost doubling from November’s 750 tonnes.

Pakistan bought 1,013 tonnes of UK material, also down from 1,239 tonnes in November.

News & Pams – Commodity code 470730

India took most of this grade in December 2022 with 9,578 tonnes, up from 6,036 tonnes in the month before.

Otherwise, the EU was the only other significant destination with 8,188 tonnes, which dropped from 11,764 tonnes in November. Of this, 5,128 tonnes went to Germany, lower than November’s 8,027 tonnes. The Netherlands also took 1,672 tonnes, again a fall on 2,166 tonnes seen in the month before.
