OCC and mixed paper exports were up in January, but news & pams exports fell for the second month in a row.

According to the latest HMRC data, a total of 192,091 tonnes of OCC was exported in January, up from December’s 185,433 tonnes. This meant exports had increased for three months in a row, but had yet to exceed 200,279 tonnes seen in October 2021.

Mixed paper exports were up a little to 144,895 tonnes from 142,239 tonnes in the last month of 2021.

News & pams fell to 26,392 tonnes from 31,561 tonnes in December and 35,835 tonnes in November.

OCC – Commodity code 470710

India was easily the dominant destination in January taking more than a quarter of all UK OCC for export that month. A total of 52,341 tonnes of OCC left the UK in January for India, up from 32,581 tonnes in December. Interestingly, this was the best month since January 2021 when 67,045 tonnes went to India from the UK.

Turkey was next best with 39,656 tonnes, although this was lower than December’s 59,469 tonnes.

Malaysia followed in January with 28,930 tonnes, increasing from December’s 23,219 tonnes.

Exports to the EU dropped to 26,768 tonnes in January from 34,424 tonnes in December. Of this, more than half went to The Netherlands with 13,531 tonnes, up from 12,001 tonnes in the previous month. Germany dropped to 4,866 tonnes from 9,877 tonnes in the preceding month. Spain took 3,480 tonnes in January only slightly down on December’s 3,511 tonnes. France imported 2,628 tonnes of UK material dropping from December’s 5,328 tonnes. Belgium increased to 1,301 tonnes from 984 tonnes the month before.

Vietnam increased to 18,710 tonnes from December’s 11,300 tonnes.

While Indonesia also jumped up to 16,009 tonnes, up from 12,839 tonnes in December.

Thailand dropped though to 7,805 tonnes in January from 9,594 tonnes in the previous month.

Mixed paper – Commodity code 470790

India became the main destination for mixed again in January after Europe had held this crown since August 2021.

It imported 39,574 tonnes up from 28,703 tonnes in December. This was the most mixed that India had imported since April last year.

The entire EU fell to 33,355 tonnes from December’s 40,694 tonnes. This was also the lowest total since April 2021. Most of this went via The Netherlands which took 22,622 tonnes, virtually unchanged since 22,638 tonnes went there in December. Germany imported 4,635 tonnes, more than half of December’s 10,214 tonnes. However, exports to Spain from the UK increased to 2,653 tonnes in January from December’s 1,430 tonnes. France took less with 2,088 tonnes going there in January, compared to 4,510 tonnes in the preceding month.

After the EU was Vietnam with 31,652 tonnes, increasing from December’s 22,744 tonnes.

Thailand dropped to 20,577 tonnes from 25,703 tonnes the month before.

Indonesia also fell in January to 10,669 tonnes compared to December’s 15,466 tonnes.

Malaysia was only a touch down with imports of 5,208 tonnes of UK material in January compared to 5,779 tonnes in the previous month.

India was the main importer of this grade in January taking 12,612 tonnes, doubling December’s 6,300 tonnes.

Next up was the EU with 10,132 tonnes, which dropped from December’s 18,794 tonnes. Germany bought 5,748 tonnes of UK material compared to 11,370 tonnes in the previous month. However, exports to The Netherlands were up to 3,037 tonnes from 2,660 tonnes in December.

Turkey fell to 1,094 tonnes from 1,390 tonnes at the end of last year.
