January 2023 was a very strong month for exports of OCC and mixed paper, but weaker for news & pams.
For OCC, a total of 273,556 tonnes was exported, compared to 219,744 tonnes in December. This made it the strongest month since November 2018.
A total of 99,885 tonnes of mixed left the UK, up from 88,695 tonnes in December.
But exports of news & pams fell to 17,236 tonnes from 19,589 tonnes in the last month of 2022.
OCC – Commodity code 470710
Malaysia imported a huge 72,846 tonnes in January from the UK, up from 54,525 tonnes in December.
India was next with 54,910 tonnes, also up from December’s 44,766 tonnes.
Vietnam followed increasing to 41,295 tonnes in January from 36,676 tonnes the month before.
Indonesia brought in 35,097 tonnes of UK OCC, almost doubling December’s 18,259 tonnes.
Thailand shot up to 28,097 tonnes, from 13,429 tonnes in the last month of last year.
Turkey imported 19,439 tonnes, down from 38,251 tonnes in December.
The EU as a whole came next with 17,125 tonnes, increasing from 13,838 tonnes in the month before. A majority went to the Netherlands with 9,540 tonnes (6,788 tonnes in December), then Germany with 4,557 tonnes (4,358 tonnes in December) and then France with 1,318 tonnes (1,273 tonnes in December).
Interestingly, the Philippines imported 3,694 tonnes in January, after no exports from the UK in December.
Despite a ban, 1,026 tonnes also went to China, after nothing went there in December.

Mixed paper – Commodity code 470790
India was the largest destination for UK mixed in January with 29,451 tonnes, although this was down on December’s 39,965 tonnes.
Vietnam was only a touch behind with 28,960 tonnes, up from 17,911 tonnes in the previous month.
The entire EU followed with 18,662 tonnes compared to December’s 12,642 tonnes. Of this, 8,918 tonnes went to the Netherlands (5,783 tonnes in December), then 7,031 tonnes to Germany (4,737 tonnes in December), 1,105 tonnes to France (588 tonnes in December) and 1,028 tonnes to Belgium (870 tonnes in December).
Thailand was up to 8,752 tonnes in January, from 4,971 tonnes the month before.
Indonesia dropped its UK imports to 4,552 tonnes compared to December’s 6,558 tonnes.
Taiwan was just behind this with 4,125 tonnes, up from 1,475 tonnes in the last month of 2022.
Turkey brought in 2,461 tonnes, increasing from December’s 1,766 tonnes.
Malaysia fell to 1,990 tonnes, dropping from 2,340 tonnes at the end of the year.

News & Pams – Commodity code 470730
The EU was the top imported of this grade in January taking 7,564 tonnes, although this was down from December’s 8,188 tonnes. Germany was the main buyer with 4,458 tonnes of this (5,128 tonnes in December), followed by the Netherlands with 1,687 tonnes (1,672 tonnes in December).
Indian imports of UK material dropped to 6,773 tonnes from December’s 9,578 tonnes.
Malaysia was the only other destination to take more than 1,000 tonnes with 1,716 tonnes after importing nothing in December.
