Recovered fibre exports bounced back in July after poor June and May, according to the latest HMRC data.
OCC saw its healthiest month since lockdown, while mixed had its best month since November 2019. News and pam exports were down though, and still weak.
OCC – Commodity code 470710
Exports of OCC reached 155,840 tonnes in July, which was the best since March and up from 125,082 tonnes in June. Although March saw 220,316 tonnes exported, so this is still down quite a bit from then.
Vietnam was the main destination in July with 39,224 tonnes going there from UK ports compared to 12,212 tonnes in June.
Not far behind was Malaysia with 35,691 tonnes jumping from 26,091 tonnes in June. This means Malaysia has now received more than 20,000 tonnes of UK OCC each month since March.
Indonesia was next with 19,840 tonnes in July up from 17,510 tonnes a month earlier.
Next was Turkey with 16,544 tonnes falling from June’s 23,392 tonnes.
India increased to 13,626 tonnes from 7,480 tonnes in June, but nowhere near the 50,000 tonnes plus that was seen each month in the first three months of this year.
China wasn’t far behind with 13,105 tonnes up from 7,347 tonne the month before.
Thailand followed with 8,312 tonnes, falling from June’s 13,809 tonnes.
Taiwan took 5,190 tonnes in July up from 2,080 tonnes the month before.
The next significant destination was the EU with just 3,965 tonnes, a big fall from 14,692 tonnes in June. Of this, 2,933 tonnes headed to the Netherlands.

Exports of mixed paper increased to 125,742 tonnes in July from 82,834 tonnes in June.
India topped the charts with 32,511 tonnes almost doubling from June’s weak 17,752 tonnes.
The EU was the next best destination with 31,855 tonnes, which was the best month in a year. It was an increase on June’s 23,141 tonnes.
15,209 tonnes of this went to the Netherlands, up by almost 100% from 7,835 tonnes in June.
Germany increased imports to 12,095 tonnes from 10,720 tonnes a month earlier.
More also went to France with 3,203 tonnes heading there, up from 2,317 tonnes in June.
Thailand increased UK imports to 13,052 tonnes in July from 7,525 tonnes the month before.
China continues to surprise considering this grade is banned with an import of 11,269 in July up from June’s 2,808 tonnes.
Taiwan was next with 10,500 in July from 6,200 tonnes in June.
This was followed by Indonesia’s 9,131 tonnes (6,100 in June) and Malaysia (5,584 in June).

July saw exports of news & pams fall to 15,443 tonnes from 19,667 tonnes in June.
The EU was the best destination with 6,337 tonnes down from 14,132 tonnes in June. France took 3,536 tonnes of the July total.
India was the next best destination with 6,005 tonnes, which was up from 3,284 tonnes in June.
