Paper exports for key grades increased in October compared to the month before, according to the latest HMRC figures.

Exports of OCC increased to 176,921 tonnes in October, from 153,058 tonnes in September.

This made it the best month since March, although it was down on October 2019’s 189,172 tonnes.

Vietnam was the destination that saw the largest exports of OCC in October taking 39,599 tonnes up from 22,528 tonnes. This was the most ever sent to Vietnam in a single month beating July 2020’s 39,224 tonnes.

Malaysia wasn’t too far behind with 37,725 tonnes, up from 26,943 tonnes in September. Like with Vietnam, this was the best ever month for Malaysia up from the previous record of 35,691 tonnes which was also seen in July.

Turkey followed as the third largest destination in October with 32,120 tonnes up from 21,692 tonnes a month earlier. This was the best month since May for Turkey when it imported 50,359 tonnes of UK material.

India imported 22,997 tonnes up from September’s 20,097 tonnes meaning the country has now imported more than 20,000 tonnes for three months in a row. Previously, India had not taken more than this since 57,101 tonnes was sent there from the UK in March.

Thailand also increased its UK imports to 17,212 tonnes almost doubling from 9,816 tonnes in September. Again, this was the best ever month for the country’s purchase of OCC from the UK.

Indonesia saw 14,690 tonnes exported from the UK to there in October more than halving September’s 31,005 tonnes. October was when the country announced a new registration process that more than likely hit export then.

China was next with 7,361 tonnes left the UK down from 13,730 tonnes in September. With the ban coming in on imports from 1 January 2021, this will most likely have been the last legal, significant export month for there.

Exports to the EU fell to 2,983 tonnes from 3,225 tonnes in September. The majority of this went via the Netherlands with 1,881 tonnes down from 2,036 tonnes a month earlier.

Mixed paper exports increased to 139,621 tonnes in October up from 123,410 tonnes the month before.

This was the best month since we began collating mixed paper data in January 2018.

India was easily the largest destination with 48,493 tonnes up from September’s 36,293 tonnes. It was also the highest month for exports to India since March when 64,345 tonnes left UK ports.

The EU as a whole was the next largest destination taking 32,899 tonnes up just a touch on September’s 31,694 tonnes. It was also the best month since November 2018. The Netherlands saw 19,735 tonnes sent there compared to 15,693 tonnes in September. However, exports to Germany in October were down to 8,468 tonnes from 11,014 tonnes the month before. France was also lower at 2,570 tonnes compared to September’s 3,641 tonnes. However, Belgium was up to 1,347 tonnes from just 718 tonnes a month earlier.

Despite it being supposedly banned, 17,972 tonnes went to China in October up from 16,325 tonnes in September.

Thailand saw an increase to 14,326 tonnes up from 9,025 tonnes in the preceding month.

Vietnam was largely stable with 13,161 tonnes in October and 13,270 tonnes in September.

Taiwan was next with 6,125 tonnes down a little from 6,925 tonnes a month earlier.

Indonesia imported 3,125 tonnes of UK material in October almost halving from September’s 6,168 tonnes.

Pakistan was the only other destination that received more than 1,000 tonnes in October with 1,101 tonnes down from 1,483 tonnes in September.

Exports of this commodity code increased to 16,857 tonnes in October from 12,187 tonnes in September.

India was the main destination with 5,882 tonnes from 4,009 tonnes a month earlier.

The EU as a whole took 4,796 tonnes down a touch on September’s 4,952 tonnes. Most went via the Netherlands with 1,621 tonnes up from 517 tonnes the month before. Spain received 1,169 tonnes of UK material increasing from 955 tonnes in September.

Malaysia saw a sharp increase to 2,338 tonnes up from 568 tonnes a month earlier.

Indonesia increased imports to 1,442 tonnes from 951 tonnes in September.
