Please note this report just focuses on the waste polymers of ethylene commodity code (391510), as exports of other plastics are relatively small in volume
April 2021 was a very strong month for exports of this commodity code, with a total of 47,850 tonnes leaving the UK for reprocessing abroad.
This compared to 35,310 tonnes in March (another strong month), but it was also the best performance since August 2019.
The EU as a whole was the main destination with 23,913 tonnes, almost doubling from March’s 12,714 tonnes.
Of this, 7,654 tonnes went to the Netherlands, compared to 4,632 tonnes in the previous month.
Poland was back again, taking 4,476 tonnes in April, from just 76 tonnes in March.
Spain was largely static in April with 2,324 tonnes, from 2,368 tonnes in the previous month.
Italy was next with 2,170 tonnes from 1,462 tonnes in March.
Belgium increased UK imports to 1,551 tonnes in April, compared to 1,156 tonnes in the preceding month.
German exports from the UK jumped to 1,247 tonnes from 279 tonnes in March.
Outside of the EU, only Turkey was significant with 23,937 tonnes, up from 22,595 tonnes in March. This shows the damage that will be caused by the loss of this market.
