Please note this report just focuses on the waste polymers of ethylene commodity code (391510), as exports of other plastics are relatively small in volume
Plastic exports jumped considerably in August with Malaysia in particular taking much more material.
Data from HMRC shows that 48,935 tonnes was sent abroad from the UK, a significant increase on July’s 33,714 tonnes. This was also the best month for exports of this commodity code since February 2017.
Malaysia was the key destination, taking 23,891 tonnes – a huge jump on July’s 2,607 tonnes. This was the highest monthly figure for exports to the country since we started collating the data in 2012.
Hong Kong was next improving in August to 9,843 tonnes from July’s 7,297 tonnes.
EU as a whole was the next best destination with 7,367 tonnes, down from 8,172 tonnes in July. Poland remained the best EU destination with 2,930 tonnes largely unchanged from 2,927 tonnes in July.
Turkey took 5,231 tonnes from the UK in August, down from 6,028 tonnes in July.
