Overall, OCC export figures from the latest official HMRC export data were down in April, with most countries not purchasing as much compared to the previous month.  

Mixed paper exports grew however, as did news & pam.

OCC seemed to struggle in April as key destinations weakened the amount they bought from the UK. 

Globally a total of 178,691 tonnes was exported from the UK in April, down from 237,290 in March. This is also down on April 2017 when 249,329 tonnes was sent abroad from the UK.  

In April this year, China decreased the amount it purchased, exporting a very low 114,351 tonnes of OCC – down on March’s 139,687 tonnes. It was also down on April 2017 when 210,157 tonnes were exported.  

India almost halved the amount it exported from the UK as it purchased 26,155 tonnes, down from the record 54,003 tonnes in March. However, it is still better than April 2017 when the figure was 19,477.  

UK exports to Indonesia fell from 13,606 in April 2017 to 6,143 this month.  

Europe’s purchases of OCC in April increased from 6,502 tonnes to 8,016 tonnes. With 4,242 tonnes, the Netherlands was the key European buyer, followed by France (2,089 tonnes) and Germany (1,183 tonnes). 

Exports to Vietnam in April were just 6,674 tonnes, down from 22,013 tonnes in March. It was also lower than April 2017 when 17,300 was exported.

Mixed paper- commodity code 470790  

Globally more mixed paper was exported in April 2018 compared to April 2017. 99,570 tonnes of mixed paper was sent abroad in April, beating the 81,390 tonnes exported in April 2017.  

India reduced the amount of mixed paper it purchased in April as the HMRC data shows 43,863 tonnes was exported from the UK, down from March’s figure of 62,254 tonnes.  

While this commodity code is banned from China, the HMRC data shows that a good amount of tonnage was exported there. 

A total of 12,467 tonnes was sent there in April, up from the 9,506 tonnes in March, but down from 16,615 tonnes in February.   

Vietnam imported 6,865 tonnes in April, up from 3,401 tonnes in March and 6,738 tonnes in February.

A total of 42,664 tonnes of news & pams was exported from the UK in April. This was up from the 38,653 tonnes in March and the 23,082 tonnes in April 2017.  

India’s was the dominant buyer with 14,271 tonnes down on March’s 16,849 tonnes. 

Indonesia was next taking 8,301 tonnes, nearly four times the amount sent in March (2,073 tonnes). 

China took 7,804 tonnes in April, compared to 7,895 in March.
