Overall, figures from the latest HMRC export data showed that countries decided to either export more or less OCC, mixed paper and news & pams throughout November.

Exports of OCC from the UK saw increases throughout November with destinations choosing to import more of this material compared to October.

Globally, 287,812 tonnes was sent abroad from the UK, an increase from last month’s figure of 245,153 tonnes. It is also a big increase on the same month last year when a total of 211,651 tonnes was exported. 

China remained the key buyer of this material, importing 187,172 tonnes, a rise on last month’s number (176,112 tonnes). It is also the highest amount the country has purchased since September 2017, meaning it is higher than this time last year when 141,195 tonnes was imported.  

India saw a sharp increase in the quantity it imported, as it bought 36,224 tonnes, up from October when it purchased 26,691 tonnes. 

Vietnam improved on last month’s purchase of 1,301 tonnes, as it bought 5,525 tonnes. However, this is still significantly down on September’s figure of 39,362 tonnes. It is also a decrease on this time last year when the number was 24,491 tonnes. This is the second lowest purchase from the country so far this year.  

The UK exported 6,607 tonnes to Indonesia in November, a slight rise from the 6,442 tonnes in October. 

EU exports saw a small increase too, importing 6,708 tonnes, up from the 5,924 tonnes last month. The Netherlands was the key buyer (2,682 tonnes), followed by Germany (2,200 tonnes).

Mixed Paper – Commodity Code 470790 

Globally, mixed paper increased slightly this month from 104, 690 tonnes in October to 105,101 tonnes in November. However, this is a decline from this time last year when 125,838 tonnes was exported.  

The EU was the best buyer for this material, importing 35,268 tonnes. This is also a big increase on last month’s import amount (24,522 tonnes).  

While mixed paper is banned from China, it still imported 21,179 tonnes, a slight increase from the 21,070 tonnes in October. It is also the second highest amount it has purchased so far this year. 

Although India was the second-best buyer of mixed paper this month, it saw a sharp decrease, as it imported 25,404 tonnes, down from the 34,736 tonnes in October.  

Indonesia’s import of this material also fell this month, as it purchased 10,882 tonnes, a decline from 16,527 tonnes last month.  

Vietnam almost doubled the quantity it bought, importing 4,836 tonnes, up from 2,640 tonnes in October.

News & Pams – Commodity Code 470730   

The UK exported a total of 27,072 tonnes in November, a decline from October’s export figure of 32,363 tonnes. 

The EU was the dominant buyer of this material as it imported 7,946 tonnes, a small rise from last month’s purchase of 7,625 tonnes. 

China was the second-highest purchaser, although the import of this material fell dramatically from 11,036 tonnes to 6,694 tonnes. This is the lowest the country has bought so far this year.  

India slightly improved the amount it imported, buying 6,538 tonnes, up from 6,453 tonnes last month. 

Hong Kong’s import fell from 3,620 tonnes to 2,030 tonnes in November.
