Overall, figures from the latest HMRC export data show that countries either sharply increased or decreased the amount they purchased of OCC, mixed paper and news & pams throughout September. Â
OCC – Commodity Code 470710Â
OCC saw some big increases and some sharp declines in imports this month depending on the destination. Â
Vietnam bought over six times as much OCC compared to August, as it imported 39,362 tonnes, up from the 5,911 tonnes in August. This is also up from September last year when 22,871 tonnes was exported from the UK. Â
While China decreased the amount of OCC it bought, purchasing 134,271 tonnes, and down from 142,177 tonnes in August, it still remained the key buyer of OCC. Â
Globally, a total of 214,968 tonnes was exported from the UK, compared to last month’s figure of 191,332 tonnes. It is also the highest figure since May 2018. However, it is down on last year when 279,045 was sent abroad from the UK. Â
India increased the quantity it imported, buying 22,356 tonnes, up from August, when 17,656 tonnes was bought. Â
EU imports halved this month, down from the 6,034 tonnes last month, to 3,191 tonnes in September. The Netherlands was the best European buyer of OCC this month, purchasing 1,708 tonnes. Â
Indonesia also halved the amount it imported, buying 3,139 tonnes, down from 6,356 tonnes last month. Â

Mixed paper – Commodity Code 470790Â
Globally, mixed paper exports slightly decreased in September, as 93,363 tonnes was exported. This is down from last month when 96,722 tonnes was exported. This is also down on September 2017, when the import figure was 97,031 tonnes. Â
Surprisingly, China was the best buyer of mixed paper this month, given the fact that this material is banned. It imported 22,855 tonnes, up significantly from August when 16,471 tonnes was exported. This is also the highest amount of mixed paper China has imported so far this year. Â
The EU fell dramatically in the total it purchased, as it went down from 27,513 tonnes to 20,093 tonnes. This is the lowest import of mixed paper for the EU since December 2017.Â
Indonesia’s import of mixed paper dramatically declined this month, as it bought 15,489 tonnes. This is down from August when the UK exported 24,614 tonnes to the country. Â
India increased the quantity it imported from the UK this month, up from 16,960 tonnes to 20,781 tonnes.Â
The UK exported 5,675 tonnes to Vietnam in September, up from last month when just 3,477 tonnes was exported. Â

News & Pams – Commodity Code 470730Â
The UK exported a total of 26,519 tonnes of news & pams throughout September. This is down from August when 28,361 tonnes was sent abroad. Â
China remained the dominant buyer of this material, even though it decreased its import figures from 11,329 tonnes to 10,739 tonnes. This is the lowest figure since April this year.Â
The EU was the second biggest buyer of this material, importing 5,110 tonnes. However, this is down from last month when the figure was 6,823 tonnes. Â
Hong Kong almost tripled the quantity it imported from the UK, buying 3,141 tonnes, up from 1,489 tonnes.Â
India slightly increased this month, buying 4,715 tonnes, a rise from the 4,369 tonnes in August.
