Recycling Paper Export Report: June 2024

These are the latest HMRC export figures for June 2024 for key paper and cardboard grades. Only destinations of more than 1,000 tonnes per month are included.

Exports of OCC to the majority of deep sea destinations in June remained steady and saw a slight increase in total volume compared to May, with 183,437 tonnes departing UK shores, compared to 179,220 in May.

Far East destinations saw a decrease in figures overall, most significantly to Vietnam, where 35,507 tonnes were registered for June, compared with 44,047 tonnes in May. 

Destinations across Europe remained buoyant, with most regions seeing an increase in materials being received from UK shores.

Mixed paper – Commodity code 470790

Exports of mixed paper during June were down again, registering the lowest figures so far in 2024. A total of 79,913 tonnes departed from UK shores, compared with 81,591 tonnes in May. Exports are around 50% of where they were the same time last year (135,004 tonnes in June 2023 for example).

India remained the dominant destination for mixed paper exports in June 2024, despite registering another decrease of tonnage (month-on-month), bringing the total exported to 28,682 tonnes, compared with 34,194 tonnes in May. 

Exports to Germany continue to increase gradually, registering 11,491 tonnes, slightly up from 10,779 in May. The rest of the European market remains steady.

Exports of this grade have seen a steady increase in materials leaving UK shores in June, compared to May. Registering a total of 13,724 tonnes that left the UK in June, compared with 12,852 in May.

India has seen a slight recovery, with another increase in materials departing UK shores, registering 3,187 tonnes in May, which is up on May’s figure of 2,893 tonnes. 

Germany continues to chart an upwards trend, registering 4,256 tonnes. Most other European destinations remain steady.
