These are the latest HMRC export figures for September 2024 for key paper and cardboard grades. Only destinations of more than 1,000 tonnes per month are included.

Exports of OCC saw a slight decrease in total volume compared to August, with 193,150 tonnes departing UK shores, compared to 209,603 in August.

Far East destinations continued to see figures increase in general, with the exception of Vietnam that saw a sharp decrease compared with August, with 39,078 tonnes registered for September, compared with 62,226 tonnes in August. Turkey continues to see a significant increase in tonnes received from UK shores, up to 25,626 tonnes in September, from 17,095 in August.

Destinations across Europe were down overall, with most regions seeing a decrease in materials being received from the UK. Germany in particular saw a significant drop in material received, with only 6,877 tonnes in September, compared to 13,902 in August, signalling an almost 50% drop.

Mixed paper – Commodity code 470790

Exports of mixed paper have decreased in the month of September, registering a total of 74,183 tonnes departing from the UK in September, compared with 92,010 tonnes in August. 

India continues to be the dominant destination for mixed paper exports in September 2024 (although it saw a decrease in tonnage received) registering a total of 32,387 tonnes of exported materials, compared with 35,349 tonnes in August. 

All other destinations in the Far East saw a decrease in materials received in September compared with August.

Exports to Europe saw decreases overall, with the exception of France where a marginal increase was registered of 4,552 tonnes, compared with 3,653 registered in August.

Exports of this grade saw a slight increase in materials leaving UK shores in September, compared to August. Registering a total of 12,431 tonnes that left the UK in September, compared with 10,904 in August.

While the overall picture saw marginal improvements in tonnes shipped, the Netherlands did however see a slight drop in materials received registering 1,340 tonnes for September, compared with 1,639 tonnes in August 2024.

All other destinations appear steady in general.
