Recycling scheme ‘could stop 500m plastic cups from polluting ocean’

A sustainability accreditation programme has hailed the creation of a breakthrough recycled polypropylene material suitable for food containment.

Prevented Ocean Plastic, a branch of Bantam Materials UK, said it had worked with a range of organisations to develop the new substance.

It said that despite being used in cups, bottles and caps, polypropylene had a post-consumer recycling rate of just 1 per cent and was the second most common plastic in the seas.

Bntam worked with Innovia Films, Spectra Packaging and Petman, using Starlinger Viscotec technology and waste collecton in Indonesia backed by Circulate Capital and Danone to create the new product.

It claimed the scheme could prevent 500 million polypropylene cups from entering the ocean in its first year alone.

Dondi Hananto, associate partner South East Asia at Circulate Capital, said: “We’re proud to support an ecosystem that brings collectors, recyclers and brands together to tackle even hard-to-recycle plastics like polypropylene.

“Starting in Indonesia, this milestone shows how collaboration can drive systemic change across global supply chains.”

Prevented Ocean Plastic has established a scalable franchise model it says can be repeated in any at-risk coastal community.
