Recycling warehouse fire declared a major incident

A major incident was declared last Friday after a huge blaze broke out at a recycling facility in the South Midlands.

The local resilience forum, which brings together blue light services, council chiefs and other bodies, took the step on 23 May after flames and smoke engulfed a warehouse at Sanders Lodge industrial estate in Rushden.

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to the scene before 7am last Friday and was still in attendance at 10am on Saturday.

Major incident status was stood down by Friday afternoon and the fire was brought under control.

However, fire chiefs said hotspots remained on the Saturday morning and road closures were still in place.

They asked people to stay away from the scene and to keep nearby windows and doors closed.

Investigations were due to begin over the weekend to determine a cause of the fire.

The blaze has widely been reported to have occurred at a Monoworld site. The recycling firm has a base on the industrial estate and has been contacted for comment.
