A Cornish school has won a playground made from recycled materials in a competition run by Terracycle.
Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy in Saltash unveiled its prize this month after collecting the most plastic bottles and food containers in a nationwide contest at the end of last year.
The school’s new playground contains slides, ramps and platforms made from the type of material gathered.
Pupils also won Sistema lunchboxes and water bottles, as did those at contest runner-up Tendring Primary School in Essex.
Darren Woolner, headteacher of Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy, said he was “incredibly proud” to have won the competition.
“The initiative has inspired our pupils to lead the way in promoting sustainability by rallying support from families, staff and members of our local community to collect and donate plastic food storage containers, reusable water bottle and caps,” he added.
“This project has not only benefited our school with a wonderful new playground but, more
importantly, it has reinforced the importance of environmental responsibility and collective
action.
“Through this experience, our pupils have gained a deeper understanding of recycling
and its positive impact, while fostering a stronger sense of community and shared purpose.”
