A scrap yard near Bradford may have to shut down if it loses its land to a supermarket development.

Crossley Evans has been on a site currently owned by Network Rail and DB Schenker Rail in Shipley since the First World War.

The location of the yard allows the company to transport scrap by rail easily.

However, Leeds-based company GMI Holdings wants to build a supermarket and petrol station on the site, and is planning to submit a planning application to Bradford Council shortly.

Crossley Evans owner Matthew Evans said: “We have no desire to move. It would be very difficult to find a site to suit our needs and the environmental impact of losing the rail link and moving materials by road would be negative.

“It would not be easy to up sticks and relocate, given the amount of material and equipment we have here.

“GMI has obviously seen the potential of the site, but there have been no formal discussions or detailed communications about their ideas.”
