Seven food giants switch to self-separating packaging for porridge

Seven major food retailers have started using self-separating packaging for their own-brand instant porridge.

Greiner Packaging said supermarkets Waitrose, Morrisons, Marks & Spencer, Tesco, Lidl and Asda had switched to its K3 r100 solution.

High street baker Greggs was also using the packaging, it said, which is designed to independently split into plastic and cardboard before being recycled in a bid to boost reprocessing rates.

“We are excited to see so many UK retailers realising the benefits of our self-separating packaging solution,” said Greiner sustainability and innovation manager Rachel Sheldon.

The move follows convenience-food producer Symington’s decision to use the self-separating packaging for its Oatburst porridge brand last summer.

Greiner said last year that its innovation meant the two materials in the packaging product could be assigned to the correct recovery lines during infared sorting.

It added that the K3 cardboard-plastic cup was convenient, appealing looking and featured a tear-tab so consumers could intuitively perform separation themselves if desired.

Sheldon said last year that the product had “made the impossible possible”.
