French company SGT is aiming to open a new rPET production unit in 2024 at its existing site in Rezé.
The firm currently produces 12,000 tonnes at a site in Chalon-sur-Saone in the South East of France, but will add another 14,000 tonnes of food grade rPET capacity at its site where its head office is also based.
This is ahead of the EU Directive that will require PET bottles to contain 25% recycled content by 2025.
SGT Group chief executive Frédéric Mignot said: “We will be increasing our rPET production capacity to 26,000 tonnes by mid-2024.
“We are investing in new technologies and in ecological and energy optimisation. This new site will enable us to reduce our CO2 emissions by limiting the flow of trucks between Chalon-sur-Saone and Rezé. This represents around 250 fewer trucks per year. We’re also planning to recruit production and maintenance operators and technicians – all the people needed to run a site like ours.”
Financial support has been given by ADEME, the ecological transition agency for western France.
Work will start on the plant in December 2023 with the aim of commissioning it in the second quarter of 2024.
